I had a call this morning with a potential client about setting up her WordPress site. We had exchanged a few emails back and forth prior to our call and one of the things she was looking for was not only someone to do theme customization, but also to do some training. Smart lady! That’s how I learned. I wasn’t interested in just getting a site or a blog up, I really wanted to know what I was doing. Another concern she had was that she really didn’t like using ftp. When I told her that if her host had cpanel, there was no need for ftp (btw – many hosting companies offer something comparable to cpanel). She was pretty excited about the idea as she said no one else she knew was aware of that.
The first and most lovable part of cpanel is fantistico! Fantastico is basically a one click install for WordPress (as well as many other things). You don’t have to download the latest version of WordPress and upload it to you your hosting account via ftp. You just select WordPress as a new installation (you do have to enter your username & password, but then just click finish installation). Super easy!
You can also use cpanel to upload new themes and plugins. From your cpanel home, just click on file manager. Once you’re inside the file manager, select the wp-content folder. From there you select either your plugins or themes folder. Click on which ever folder you’re uploading to, then select upload. A new window will open with three boxes for upload. Just click browse, find the zip file on your computer, and upload. Once the upload is complete, go back to your folder. Click the uploaded zip file and then select extract. That’s it! All done!
But the beauty of WordPress 2.7 is that you don’t even have to do that for plugins anymore! You can load them directly from your dashboard- from either your computer or the WordPress Plugins directory! SOOOOO easy…I love it!
