Icon Fontastic
So after playing with the Font Awesome icons last month I became a little obsessed with making this easier for people to use. I showed my biz partner, Steve O’Sullivan how friggin in love with icon fonts I was and in my crazy, obsessive WordPress way suggested we take it a step further by creating our own plugin where people could simply click on the icon they wanted to use and VOILA! It would be inserted into their content.

No shortcode required!

Not too shabby of an idea if I do say so myself! (not too modest, am I Image may be NSFW.

Let me introduce you to “Icon Fontastic.”

First, in case you missed my previous post (Font Icons – What They Are and How to Use Them [VIDEO] ), font icons are basically a set of icons that you can use in the same way you would Image may be NSFW.

a font. So you can load them into your computer like a font or use them on the web like a font, but instead of letters you have icons. And if you’re a visual geek like me you LOVE stuff like this.

Benefit 1

Besides just looking good (that arrow is from one of the fonts in our plugin), the benefit of using font icons is that it breaks up your content /text. Writing on the web should NOT be done in the same way you would write a paper or anything for school, an editor, print copy, etc.

People don’t read the web the same way they read printed materials (I’m not talking about ebooks on kindle or any other formatted ebook for an electronic reader). Many people skim web pages and if you don’t break up your content, use compelling images throughout your posts (it’s not a secret why Pinterest grew as quickly as it did… we are visual creatures!) you may lose your reader.

Benefit 2

The other oh-so-important benefit to breaking up your content with images, icons and relevant font size changes is SEO. Yep, that thing that everyone knows they should be doing but really don’t want to spend a whole lot of time and effort doing (o.k., maybe I’m speaking for myself here, but I know some of you know what I’m talking about).  If you look above in this post where I wrote Let me introduce you to “Icon Fontastic“, I used an h2 tag, which is good for SEO because my keyword for this post is Icon Fontastic. By bolding that in the last sentence I’m also adding a little ‘SEO’ value while making an easy reference to earlier text in the post.

O.K., since I hadn’t intended to make this an SEO lesson, let’s get on with the plugin details.

Not that there’s much to it, here’s all you need to do:

Install the plugin Go to the plugin settings and select which sets of icons (fonts) you want to enable Click Save Settings Write your post and insert your icons!

EASY PEASY, huh? Oh, and if you’re wondering, Icon Fontastic is only $17!

BUT… I still made a video to show you how simple it is to use and how friggin awesome it can make your content look! (I know, I overuse the word friggin… I’m working on it!)
