It’s been a while since I’ve done a video on a free plugin and I just found this one today so thought I’d better jump on it!
First, let me tell you the reason I decided to look for an Author Box plugin to add to my site.
I’ve looked at Author Box plugins before and liked them I just never pulled the trigger. I decided to add one to the site because of my podcast. As the podcast has grown much of my traffic and coaching clients are coming from the podcast, so it only makes sense to do some testing and tweaking, right? I’m referring to specific calls to action from the podcast to certain pages with vanity URL’s (ex: calltoaction.com which will redirect to a specific page). I’ve been looking at other sites with podcasts or how other podcasters are doing things and one of the things I noticed was the Author Box.
One of the reasons I hadn’t installed an Author Box plugin prior to now was that it seemed kind of redundant. I have my name in the header and all over the site… did I really need to have it show up at the bottom of my posts too?
And what purpose would it serve?
One of the MOST important purposes of all.
Connection.
Once you’ve been blogging for a while you sort of forget that other people don’t know what you know or you make assumptions about your audience (all good for course :-) ). Ideally you’re sharing your content on multiple social media platforms and you’re linking back to different links on your website, not just the homepage. If someone finds your site for the first time through one of your recently shared posts or pages and they don’t know who you are, it kind of makes sense to have the Author Box show up at the end of the post, don’t you think? (clearly I didn’t until now…)
There are a few premium plugins available for an Author Box but like I always do, I checked the WordPress plugin repository and found a handful of potential plugins I could use. I chose the Starbox Author Box because of its simplicity and cleanliness. Because I use a lot of color and images on my site I didn’t want the Author Box to look too busy. As I’m writing this post I’m probably going to do a little bit of customizing of the box (nothing major, maybe a larger font and a link in the box…. not a bad idea, huh?) and see how that works.
(*TIP* if you’re going to try things, in this case a link to a call to action, make sure you use a custom link tracker so you can measure if it’s effective).
Let’s jump into the plugin and the video (the video is below the images). :-)
First, there are only 2 steps involved in setting this plugin up (after you install it).
1) Select your style
2) Add your social media links (if desired)
